Most washing machine call-outs we attend in Gurgaon are not really breakdowns. They are the result of hard water, too much detergent, or a drum that has been asked to carry more than it can. All three are avoidable.
Hard water is the main culprit
Groundwater across much of Gurgaon is hard, and the scale it leaves builds up on the heating element and inside the drum. Scale insulates the element, so the machine takes longer to heat, uses more power and eventually fails. Run a hot cycle with a descaling powder or two cups of white vinegar once a month, with the drum empty.
Use less detergent, not more
Excess detergent does not wash clothes cleaner. It leaves a residue in the drum and pipes that traps lint, feeds bacteria and causes the sour smell people associate with front-load machines. Follow the dosage on the pack, and always use a low-foam detergent marked for front-load machines if that is what you have.
Clean the filter every month
Front-load machines have a drain-pump filter behind a small hatch at the bottom front. Coins, buttons, hair clips and lint collect there. A blocked filter is the single most common cause of “the machine will not drain” complaints, and clearing it takes five minutes with a shallow bowl and a towel.
Do not overload the drum
An overloaded machine cannot balance during the spin cycle, and the resulting vibration wears out the drum bearings — one of the most expensive repairs there is. As a rule, you should be able to fit a flat hand between the top of the laundry and the drum roof.
Leave the door open between washes
A sealed, damp drum grows mould on the rubber gasket. Leave the door ajar for an hour after the final load, and wipe the gasket fold dry once a week.
Check the inlet and drain hoses
Inlet hoses perish with age and can burst under mains pressure while you are out of the house. Look for bulges or crazing on the rubber, and replace them every five years as a matter of routine. Make sure the drain hose is not pushed so far into the outlet that it siphons water back.
What needs a technician
Grinding during the spin, water leaking from the base, a drum that fills but will not rotate, error codes on the display, or a machine that trips the RCD are all signs to stop using it and call for a diagnosis. Continuing to run a machine with a failing bearing usually turns a moderate repair into a replacement.
