7 Signs Your AC Needs Servicing

An air conditioner rarely fails without warning. In Gurgaon, where an AC runs hard from March to October and sits idle through winter, the early signs are easy to miss until the machine gives up on the hottest day of the year. Here is what to watch for.

1. It takes much longer to cool the room

If a room that used to cool in fifteen minutes now takes forty-five, the likely causes are a clogged filter, dirty condenser coils or low refrigerant. Cleaning is inexpensive; running the unit in this state for a whole summer is not, because the compressor works far harder than it was designed to.

2. Airflow from the vents has dropped

Hold your hand in front of the indoor unit. Weak airflow usually means the filter or blower wheel is choked with dust, which is common here after the pre-monsoon dust storms. It can also point to a failing blower motor.

3. Water dripping inside the room

A split AC drains condensate through a pipe that slopes outside. When that pipe blocks with algae or slips out of alignment, water backs up and drips down your wall. Left alone it damages plaster and the indoor PCB.

4. A musty or burning smell

A damp, sour smell means mould in the drain tray or on the evaporator coil, and it is worth fixing for health reasons alone. A burning or plastic smell is different and more urgent: switch the unit off at the MCB and call a technician, because it usually means overheating wiring.

5. Unusual noise

Rattling normally means a loose panel or a fan blade catching. Grinding or screeching from the outdoor unit points to compressor or fan-motor bearings. A clicking that repeats every few seconds without the compressor starting is often a failed capacitor, which is a cheap part if caught early.

6. The MCB trips when the AC starts

Never solve this by resetting the breaker repeatedly. A trip on start-up means the compressor is drawing far more current than it should, or there is an insulation fault. Both need diagnosis before something more expensive fails.

7. Electricity bills climbing with no change in usage

A dirty coil or a partial gas leak makes an AC run longer to reach the same temperature. The unit still cools, so nothing looks wrong, but you pay for it every month.

How often should an AC be serviced?

Twice a year suits most Gurgaon homes: a full service before summer starts, and a clean before you shut it down for winter. Homes near main roads or construction sites collect dust faster and benefit from a third filter clean mid-season. If your AC has been sitting unused since last September, service it before the first hot week rather than during it.
